About ESEC
General Info/Services
The Ethical Science and Education Coalition
(ESEC) was founded in 1991 to facilitate the implementation
of student "choice" policies in elementary and secondary schools.
These policies protect students from academic penalty when they
do not wish to participate in specimen dissection labs. ESEC's
current mission
as the educational affiliate of the New England Anti-Vivisection
Society (NEAVS), is to replace the harmful use of animals at
all levels of education and professional training.
ESEC established a Resource Room and Loan
Library containing various alternative educational tools to
support these efforts. In 1992, ESEC published Beyond
Dissection, a catalog of innovative, non-animal teaching
tools, which contained only 43 entries in its first edition.
Today, ESEC continues to expand its scope
and resources. The third edition (1998) of Beyond Dissection
boasted more than 400 entries, and the fourth edition (currently
in production) will be Web-based and available for free via
this Web site. ESEC is continuing the tradition of workshops
on dissection alternatives, tabling at conventions, presentations
at schools, and awards for humane, non-animal science fair
projects.
In addition, NEAVS/ESEC is a major sponsor
of the second edition of From Guinea Pig to Computer Mouse,
by InterNICHE,
which contains over 500 alternatives for use at the undergraduate
and professional school levels. We are also establishing new
ventures, such as this newly developed Web site, which provides
educators, students, and advocates with extensive, up-to-date
information regarding dissection. Our efforts for animal-friendly
education are expanding into college/university and professional
schools.
ESEC offers a variety of services to support
the use of humane alternatives to traditional dissection in
classrooms including:
- Education Specialist to provide alternatives
for students tailored to meet the learning objectives of
the teacher.
- Assistance in the selection of alternative
teaching tools and the development of lesson plans for teachers.
- Information on funding available for
alternatives, including loan libraries and pilot program
grants.
- Professional Development Points (PDP)
and training for teachers on the use of alternatives.
