Next of Kin East Coast Presentation
NEAVS’ World Week for Animals in Labs (WWAIL)
2002 event April 20th drew a capacity audience. The talk by Dr.
Roger and Deborah Fouts, co-founders of the
Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute (CHCI),
deeply moved long time animal advocates as well as those new to
the cause.
Following the Foutses’ inspirational talk, the
audience previewed the new “Next of Kin” Compassionate Interdisciplinary
Science Curriculum via a presentation by its writer, Rachel
Fouts-Carrico, Roger and Deb’s daughter.
Developed in collaboration with NEAVS/ESEC,
the NOK curriculum focuses on free-living and captive chimpanzees
as a way to introduce 6th - 9th grade students to important science
lessons.
“Interest in and use of this important compassionate
science curriculum is developing quickly and broadly,” comments
NEAVS President Dr. Theo Capaldo.
The United Federation of Teachers/Humane
Education Committee, based in New York City, and NEAVS
are currently finalizing plans to promote teacher-training workshops
on incorporating the NOK lessons into their curriculum, according
to Capaldo.
