Kids and Dissection

What is Dissection?
Dissection is the act of cutting and examining a dead animal, under the supervision of a teacher, to learn about how that animal's body looks and works. Thousands of students dissect animals, or specimens, in their science classes every year.

Students and Dissection

Why do some students refuse to dissect?

There are many different reasons including:

  • Religion: Some religions believe killing animals or certain kinds of animals is wrong.
  • Moral beliefs: A moral belief is something a person thinks is right or wrong. Some people believe killing an animal for a science class or killing an animal at all is wrong.
  • Environment: Dissection has many bad effects on the environment. Some people believe it is wrong to harm the environment and the animals that live in it.
  • Animal abuse: Animals are caught, killed, and filled with chemicals to make them into specimens. Many people believe it is wrong to hurt and use animals in this way.

If you do not want to participate in a dissection class, please
contact ESEC
for help.

Alternatives to Dissection

How can students learn about animals without dissecting?
beyond dissectionAlternatives to dissection include charts, models, videos, and computer programs. Students can use alternatives for free by calling the Loan Libraries that are maintained by animal advocacy organizations.

Being Kind to Animals and the Environment
It is hard to understand why people would want to hurt animals. It is hard to hear about the awful things that happen to many animals. It is, though, important to know how we can help to stop animal abuse. Millions of animals are killed every year for dissection, and many of them are hurt and abused in the process. Dissection also harms the environment with toxic chemicals and by removing animals from their natural habitats.
