Tools for Teachers

Sample Lesson Plan: Cat

Dissection alternatives are exceptionally versatile educational tools, and when grouped together they create a conceptually advanced experience for students and teachers. This lesson plan serves as a model for similar topics as well, and illustrates the wealth of information available via these unique tools.

All materials listed are available on loan through ESEC’s Loan Library Program.

Designed for grades 9 – 12.

Materials

  • Neotek’s Catlab CD-ROM
  • Catworks CD-ROM
  • Pictorial Anatomy of the Cat by Gilbert

Sample Lesson Plan

Week 1

  • Catworks CD-ROM - Perform the dissection of the cat up to Intestine Cut 1. Review all the terminology and descriptions of organs and histology. Draw diagrams of the internal organs. Review the Schematics entitled Lateral Muscles, Hindlimbs, Skull, and Forelimb/Hindlimb, along with the labels and their accompanying descriptions.

  • Neotek’s Catlab CD-ROM – Review chapters 2, 3, and 4 in lecture (focusing on organ/system identifications) and tutorial (focusing on the audio lecture) modes.

  • Pictorial Anatomy of the Cat* – Read the sections entitled The Skeleton, The Muscles, and Definitions of Descriptive Terms.

Week 2

  • Catworks CD-ROM – Continue the dissection, stopping at the Kidney Cut. Draw diagrams of the internal organs. Review the Schematics entitled Liver – dorsal view and Deep Structures.

  • Neotek’s Catlab CD-ROM – Review chapters 5, 6, and 8 in lecture and tutorial modes.

  • Pictorial Anatomy of the Cat – Read the sections entitled The Circulatory System and The Digestive and Respiratory Systems.

Week 3

  • Catworks CD-ROM – Complete the dissection. Review the Schematics entitled Eye, Spinal Cord, Brain, and Urogenital.

  • Neotek’s Catlab CD-ROM – Review chapters 7, 9, and 10 in lecture and tutorial modes.

  • Pictorial Anatomy of the Cat – Read the sections entitled The Urogenital System and The Nervous System.

Week 4

  • Catworks CD-ROM - Answer 100 questions in the Quiz section. Finish Lab Practicals 1 – 10.

  • Neotek’s Catlab CD-ROM – Review chapters 2 – 10 in Quiz mode.

* Weeks 1 – 4

  • Pictorial Anatomy of the Cat – Compare the diagrams to the images in Catworks and Catlab to reinforce the material. Focus on functions and positions, not the specifics of the dissection. St., Suite 850 Boston,
