Tools for Teachers

Sample Lesson Plan: Frog

Dissection alternatives are exceptionally versatile educational tools, and when paired together, they create a conceptually advanced experience for students and teachers.

This lesson plan serves as a model for similar topics as well, and illustrates the wealth of information available via these unique tools. All materials listed are available on loan through ESEC’s Loan Library Program.

Materials

  • Neotek’s Froglab CD-ROM
  • Digital Frog2 CD- ROM with workbook
  • Biocam Frog Dissection Chart
  • Frog Dissection Manual by Winegerd

Sample Lesson Plan

  • Digital Frog2 CD-ROM - Perform the dissection of the frog brain and eyes. Review the central nervous system, neurons, autonomic nervous system, and nerves in the Anatomy section of the program. Also review hibernation and feeding in the Ecology/Behavior section. In the Digital Frog2 CD-ROM workbook, answer Dissection questions 38 – 44, 14 – 21 and 26 - 35 relating to the Nervous System, and 8 - 12 in the Ecology section. (This may be done as a quiz or worksheet.)
  • Biocam Frog Chart – Review the diagram of the frog brain and memorize the identifications. Draw a picture of the brain with labels and diagrams. Return to Digital Frog2. Return to the image of the revealed frog brain in the Dissection section. Compare the structures in this image with those diagramed in the Chart.
  • Neotek’s Froglab, The Nervous System – Review slides 1,2,5,6, and 7 in tutorial and lecture modes. In Quiz mode, view slides 1 - 7 and identify all labeled organs. Answer the following questions:
    1. Why is the term olfactory nerve misleading?
    2. What is the function of the longitudinal fissure?
    3. The large size of these lobes illustrates that vision is important to the frog.
    4. What cells give the pia mater a darker color?
    5. Compare and contrast the images of the brain in Froglab with the dissected frog brain in the Biocam Chart.
  • Frog Dissection Manual – Read pages 44 - 49 and review all diagrams. Use the diagrams in the manual to identify similar structures in the Digital Frog2, Froglab, and Biocam Chart images.

Define the following terms:

  • Forebrain
  • Midbrain
  • Hindbrain
  • Cerebrospinal Fluid
  • Afferent
  • Efferent

"In high school, I was forced to dissect fetal pigs, frogs and cats. This in no way contributed to my future career as a veterinarian; and, in fact, nearly derailed my dreams." (Read more)

"I am fortunate to practice a profession which gives me enormous pleasure, intellectual challenge, and even spiritual fulfillment. However, the path to gaining my credentials was laced with episodes that I found ethically disturbing and very sad." (Read more)
