The National Institutes of Health (NIH) issued a heavily anticipated decision June 26, 2013 to retire nearly 90% of its chimpanzees. However, NEAVS believes its decision to keep a “reserve” population of up to 50 for “future potential research” is unscientific and unnecessary. “Though we praise NIH’s decision to retire most of its chimpanzees, the decision to keep a reserve population flies in the face of scientific evidence establishing how…

President's Message: A focus of our Summer UPDATE is the recognition of the right of all animals to move freely, look up at open skies, and live as nature intended. As we go to press, we await the decision of whether NIH will accept the recommendations of its appointed council – including recommendations that chimpanzees live with fresh air, natural surroundings, space to climb and move, and in a world as meaningful as captivity can provide.  You and I cherish our…

May 30, 2013 Bailey, J. European Pharmaceutical Contractor (EPC). June 2013 Press Release

NEAVS Science Advisor Jarrod Bailey, PhD argues that an adherence to animal testing methods (ATMs) in drug development and testing is not scientifically justifiable. The burgeoning field of non-ATMs is better placed to achieve this, and an urgent move towards their greater adoption by industry is both warranted and imperative.
