Update: This petition is now closed. Each year approximately 8,500 goats and pigs are wounded or killed in U.S. military trauma training. They endure cruel and unnecessary procedures that often involve amputations, stab wounds, and severe burns. The Battlefield Excellence through Superior Training (BEST) Practices Act of 2013 (H.R. 3172/S. 1550), a bipartisan bill introduced by Rep. Hank Johnson (GA) and Sen. Ron Wyden (OR), would prohibit the use of…

Update: This petition is now closed. The world’s fourth-largest pharmaceutical company, Merck, recently announced it will end biomedical research on chimpanzees. The decision is in line with recent conclusions of the Institute of Medicine, NIH’s decision to stop funding the use of chimpanzees and retire nearly 90% of its own chimpanzees, and NEAVS’ series of scientific papers showing how unnecessary and unproductive the use of chimpanzees for human research is.…

As spring approaches, many students studying the life sciences will be given lessons in anatomy and physiology through classroom dissection of frogs and other animal specimens. If you or someone you know prefers not to dissect once-living animals, be assured there are alternatives. Advanced computer programs simulate dissection, and studies show students who use these learn as well as or better than students using specimens. Parents and students, ask teachers…

President's Message: For the Northern Hemisphere, this year’s autumnal equinox came Sept. 22. The harvest moon rose the 19th, followed by a procession of moonlit nights. Harvest, when we reap what we sow, begins introspective time. We review our labors, the elements that enriched or hampered growth. NEAVS’ cycle is not unlike Nature’s who rewards thoughtful preparation, the right environment, and hard work. Born of those three elements, I hope you share our enthusiasm for our new campaigns launched this fall. “Common Ground” blends three social issues…

Update: These petitions are now closed. Despite the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announcing it will retire all federally owned chimpanzees in laboratories (with the significant exception of 50 to be held for "future potential research"), four labs still house a large number of privately owned chimpanzees who they have not yet scheduled for retirement. These labs are fighting to hold on to the millions in funding they have received…

After years of planning, the Nonhuman Rights Project this week filled three landmark lawsuits in New York aimed at releasing four chimpanzees from captivity. The suits are the first actions in a broader strategy dedicated to granting nonhuman animals their own legal rights. Chimpanzees were selected for the first lawsuits as they are beyond doubt socially and cognitively complex, as well as the closest relative of humans. Dolphins, whales, and…

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently retired nearly 90% of federally owned chimpanzees in laboratories. However, until last week there were numerous questions surrounding how their retirement would be paid for. With a $100,000 grant to federal sanctuary Chimp Haven, NEAVS was the first to step up and help. Our seed money went to support the first chimpanzees the NIH retired last fall from Louisiana’s New Iberia Research Center…

The following was originally published on One Green Planet as "No, Bear Bile Cannot Prevent Type 1 Diabetes" Research showing a chemical found in the bile of bears can slow the development of type 1 diabetes in mice recently drew headlines in numerous outlets. Putting aside well-documented evidence showing how non-predictive research data from mice is when applied to humans (e.g., a collaborative study by academics, government, and private companies showing…
