NEAVS Takes
Airway Education and Research Foundation to Task
Upon learning that goats will be
used to demonstrate intubation and cricothyrotomy techniques
for humans at the Street Level Airway Management (SLAM) conference,
October 5-7, 2001, NEAVS wrote immediately to conference organizers,
informing them that there are more humane and realistic ways
to teach these procedures.
NEAVS Director of Research and Investigation,
Ann Stauble, pointed out that a 1994 survey concluded: "Pediatric
residency programs for some of the most distinguished medical
institutions…train exclusively on mannequins, human cadavers,
individual neonates or infants undergoing general anesthesia….
It is not necessary to use cats or other animals to train
this procedure effectively."
Further, excellent human simulators
are now available and have received positive reviews from
students at Harvard and other institutions. NEAVS has offered
to provide sanctuary for any goats who have already been
purchased for this cruel and unnecessary exercise which
must not happen!
Please write to the organizers
and let them know that the caring public will not tolerate
such cruel use of animals:
