Letters-to-the-Editor Tips
- Carefully review the word limit,
format in which to submit your letter (e.g. mail or fax),
and any other details which could disqualify your letter
if not adhered to.
- In your first sentence, reference
the specific news report, editorial or column to which you
are responding.
- Be passionate, but polite.
- Be sure of your facts and attributions;
avoid anecdotal evidence.
- Keep your arguments and concerns
specific to the area covered by the newspaper or other medium
to which you are responding.
- State your credentials, expertise
and interests. This establishes you as an informed source
with a valid opinion.
- Avoid irony or sarcasm. Sometimes
the reading public just doesn’t "get it."
- Many Web sites have guidelines
on writing about specific issues as well as names of appropriate
legislators and other opinion makers to contact. You might
want to do an Internet search before you compose your letter
or opinion piece.
