Win Scored for Young Chimpanzees -- Arthur and Phoenix

Joint Dismissal of Diamond Action, Inc.’s litigation against Greenville (NH) Wildlife Park allows NEAVS to place Young Chimpanzees in Florida Sanctuary

Arthur enjoys his first plate of juicy-fruit at CCCC.

(continued. . .) In the world of “entertainment,” claims by some that “training methods have changed,” does not change the doomed existence chimpanzees endure. “Working” chimps cannot be allowed to be real chimps. Rather, trainers must be able to execute complete control over them at all times.

Chimpanzees can outgrow their usefulness to trainers at a very early age given their enormous strength. Their lives have often included isolation from other chimpanzees, living in small enclosures (that sadly may meet the minimal and inadequate USDA standards), crushing boredom and continual exploitation.

Says NEAVS’ President, “Having just returned from Florida to help with their arrival and transition, I am assured that Arthur and Phoenix will now, thanks to Carole Noon and her amazing staff, have the very best that captivity could ever provide. As Carol skillfully transitions them from human dependence to one day having a chimpanzee mom or dad or uncle or aunt of their own, they will never be exploited. The morning that I left, I sat and watched CCCC’s existing group of chimpanzees on the sunny and misty island carrying pumpkins that had been hidden for them throughout the 3 acres. I watched them gather in small groups to enjoy their spoils and to enjoy each other’s company. I felt extremely lucky to be getting a glimpse of Arthur and Phoenix’s future.”

Dr. Jane Goodall — along with experts Dr. Roger Fouts of the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute, and Dr. Richard Allen of the Fauna Foundation in Canada — was among the many chimpanzee experts who had signed letters or affidavits on behalf of Arthur and Phoenix.

When notified of the successful rescue, Dr. Goodall said,

“I am deeply moved that two more chimpanzees will never know the horrors of biomedical research or the confinement and indignities of entertainment. I applaud NEAVS, Dr. Capaldo, CCCC, and Dr. Noon for helping Arthur and Phoenix to now have a much brighter future.”
