"Next of Kin"A Compassionate Interdisciplinary
Science Curriculum
Grades 2-5
In a continuing collaborative effort, Friends
of Washoe (FOW) and the New
England Anti-Vivisection Society (NEAVS) are proud to announce
the second installment of “Next of Kin, A Compassionate,
Interdisciplinary Science Curriculum” (NOK).
This second installment includes
lessons and activities appropriate for elementary students grades
2-5.
The first installment released
fall 2001 included lessons and activities for grades 6-9.
Once completed the curriculum series will be
the first of its kind and cover the range of grades 2-12.
This one-of-a-kind curriculum introduces students
to information and issues dealing with free-living and captive
chimpanzees. It also introduces students to issues surrounding
experimentation on all non-human animals.
In contrast to many curricula, this is one that
uses sound empirical research to support a compassionate approach
for the study of all our fellow animals. (The curriculum lessons
are designed so they can be used comprehensively, as a supplement
or as extra lessons as needed.)
The second installment is available to teachers,
parents and friends of students by ordering through the FOW or
NEAVS websites (www.friendsofwashoe.org
OR www.neavs.org).
This new elementary curriculum for grades 2-5
can be ordered in binder form or at a reduced cost on a CD-ROM
in a printable pdf format. The first installment for grades 6-9
can also be ordered through the FOW and NEAVS
websites. Please check the websites for ordering
information.
