Title
(Fall 2001)Dorothy Checchi-O’Brien, a longtime friend of NEAVS
and of animals everywhere, died August 27, 2001 at her home.
"We are very sad to have lost such an impassioned, bright,
hardworking and brave advocate for the animals," said
NEAVS President Dr. Theodora Capaldo.
"Dorothy was fearless in her convictions and worked
day and night to do all that she could to make a difference
for the animals. She took on all sizes of opponents and even
our own when she felt that what they were doing was not enough.
She worked over the years for her beloved ‘wildlife,’ but
was equally committed to anti-vivisection and all other animal
issues."
Dorothy described herself as a "volunteer animal lobbyist,"
and Capaldo describes her as "the mother of animal activism
in Massachusetts" – striding the corridors of the State
House, tirelessly committed to her life mission of advocating
for justice and kindness for all species.
"Her years of experience, coupled with her keen intelligence,
made her a wealth of information for anyone who asked. Dorothy
leaves us all wiser and more committed than ever to the causes
that we shared with her," said Capaldo. "We extend
our deepest sympathies to Dorothy’s husband and former NEAVS
Board member, John, on her passing, and offer our support
in his continuing their legacy of compassion."
