MA Dissection Choice Bill Hops
Back into the Spotlight Momentum builds under new legislature
(Winter 2001) State
Representative Louis Kafka (D-Sharon - see photo) has re-introduced
the student dissection choice bill into the MA legislature, and
there appears to be very strong support for passage in 2001. When
passed, "An Act Relative to the Study of Dissection Alternatives
in the Schools" (formerly House Bill 1904) would make Massachusetts
the ninth state to protect students' rights of conscience to choose
not to dissect animals.
Last year the bill had the bi-partisan support of some 30 legislators,
but simply ran out of time due to prolonged budget hearings as the
2000 legislative session wound down. This year, with several new
faces emerging on Beacon Hill, the bill has already garnered 40
co-sponsors including the co-chair of the Education Committee Representative
Lida Harkins.
NEAVS and its affiliate, ESEC, are again requesting dissection
choice supporters, especially parents and students, to contact their
legislators and urge passage of the bill as re-introduced by Representative
Kafk
