NEAVS honors Dr. Ethel Thurston
at Cleveland Amory Humane Achievement Award ceremony
(Winter 2001) Scientists and anti-vivisectionists from around
the world gathered in New York on October 21, 2000, as NEAVS honored
Dr. Ethel Thurston, founding trustee of the American Fund for Alternatives
to Animal Research (AFAAR). "Dr. Thurston is universally recognized
and admired as one of the first and leading supporters of non-animal
testing methods. She is considered by many as having been 'AR' before
AR was even coined as a term," said NEAVS President Theodora Capaldo,
EdD, in presenting the award.
Dr. Thurston received a bonded bronze sculpture of the Brown Dog,
a poignant symbol of the plight of animals used in vivisection.
Dr. Thurston is the second recipient of this prestigious award;
Marian Probst, president of The Fund for Animals, received the flagship
award in 1999.
