NEAVS inaugurates scholarship in memory of Dr. Bjorn Ekwall

(Winter 2001)— With great sadness, NEAVS announces the death of Dr. Bjorn Ekwall, MD, PhD, an internationally renowned toxicologist and our steadfast advisor, colleague and friend.

Prior to his death last year, Dr. Ekwall was director of the Cytotoxicity Laboratory, Uppsala (CTLU) and chairman of the Scandinavian Society for Cell Toxicology. At the 3rd World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences, Dr. Ekwall announced results from the CTLU's Multicenter Evaluation of In Vitro Cytotoxicity (MEIC) project indicating that it is possible to entirely replace acute toxicity tests with a battery of in vitro tests thereby actually increasing safety for consumers and, ultimately, ending animal testing altogether.

In Dr. Ekwall's memory, NEAVS has created the Dr. Bjoorn Ekwall Scholarship Award in recognition of his pioneering work in developing a more scientifically sound, in vitro (non-animal) approach to toxicolocy tests. Both NEAVS and AFAAR have been major sponsors of Dr. Ekwall's work for many years.

NEAVS is proud to inaugurate this scholarship, recognizing Dr. Ekwall as a pioneer in the movement to end animal suffering at the hands of experimenters, in order to support students of science who are committed to the "single minded pursuit" of better science through elimination and replacement of animals.
