ESEC urges Commonwealth to implement cruelty-free procurement policy

(Winter 2001)— NEAVS' affiliate, the Ethical Science and Education Coalition (ESEC), has submitted a proposal to the state Procurement Office urging the commonwealth to show preference for animal friendly, environmentally sound, cruelty-free companies in the contract bidding process by which vendors submit proposals to provide goods and services for the state.

Massachusetts is known across the nation as a socially progressive state and, if ESEC's recent proposal is implemented, Massachusetts will again be a leader in encouraging animal-friendly practices.

An addition to the Massachusetts procurement process that recognizes the value of cruelty-free consumerism is a practical way to help animals, humans, and the environment. The ESEC proposal was presented to the Procurement Office in November, 2000. Our next meeting is set for this January, and the proposal is under consideration at press time.
