Greyhound Update
(Winter 2001)
(Winter 2001) Supportive phone calls and letters flooded
the NEAVS office in response to an educational ad placed shortly
before votes were cast on November 7, 2000 to decide the fate of
greyhounds in Massachusetts.
NEAVS' large-scale effort to increase public awareness of the
cruelties experienced by racing greyhounds was instrumental in getting
people to understand the true price the racing industry exacts from
these gentle, trusting dogs. The public really needs to think hard
about the cost to these animals both on and off the track. Many
people seldom stop to consider that these dogs can live far beyond
their racing days and that the cruelties they experience are by
no means isolated within the industry itself.
The fact that Ballot Question 3 was narrowly defeated 51% to 49%
(see cover story), indicates a strong and growing number of citizens
who are ready to stop a business that also feeds the deep-pocketed
vivisection industry while treating animals as disposable commodities.
