Ground broken on new home for former
'space chimps
(Winter 2001)
Major support from NEAVS is helping to fuel the efforts of the Center
for Captive Chimpanzee Care (CCCC), said Carole Noon, PhD, the Center's
Director. CCCC broke ground on August 18 for its chimpanzee sanctuary
to house 21 descendants and companions of the Air Force's "space
chimps." The 21 chimpanzees coming to the sanctuary are a small
group released from The Coulston Foundation (TCF) research facility
in New Mexico. The Coulston Foundation's treatment of the chimpanzees
has long been decried by animal rights advocates. TCF is no stranger
to charges against them by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for
violations of the Animal Welfare Act.
Noon's plans will not stop with the rescue of these 21 chimps, she
vows. In fact, the architectural plans for the sanctuary include
enough quality space to continue rescue efforts for many more chimpanzees.
NEAVS sees our support of the CCCC as one of those too few opportunities
to provide animals from laboratories the sanctuary they deserve
to live out their lives in peace and dignity - freed at last from
the pain and loneliness of laboratories.
