(Winter 2002) The vital work of Björn
Ekwall, MD, PhD, at the Cytotoxicology Laboratory (CTLU) in Uppsala,
Sweden, will continue, aided by major funding from longtime supporter
NEAVS. The late Dr. Ekwall, along with his wife Barbro, is remembered
as a pioneer in developing a more scientifically sound, in vitro
(non-animal) approach to toxicology tests.
Cecilia Clemedson, PhD, has been selected
to coordinate the continuing work of Dr. Ekwall’s team, and will
also serve as NEAVS Science Advisor. She holds a PhD in neurotoxicology
from the University of Stockholm, and is a member of the Executive
Board of the European Society of Toxicology In Vitro. She is the
author of several books and articles.
Before his death, Dr. Ekwall organized the
Multicenter Evaluation of In Vitro Cytotoxicity Tests (MEIC) program,
combining the efforts of 29 laboratories from 15 countries to create
an alternative to the cruel and unnecessary LD50 tests routinely
done on large numbers of animals to test products’ harmful effects.
The project’s next phase, called EDIT (Evaluation-guided
Development of New In Vitro Toxicity and Kinetic Tests), focuses
on converting the MEIC findings into practical testing by further
developing and evaluating batteries of additional tests for toxicity.
